Monday, January 29 is the start to NOVA's special event American Visionary: A Festival Celebrating the Music of Michael Hersch.
NOVA is collaborating with other arts organizations in Salt Lake for a festival devoted to the music of the extraordinary American composer Michael Hersch. He has been hailed as "a natural musical genius who continues to surpass himself" (Washington Post).
Michael Hersch is truly a fascinating and tremendously important composer emerging onto the international stage. The festival is the most important project our Artistic Director, Jason Hardink has put together during his nine year tenure. Jason finds Michael's music to be so incredibly poignant and fiercely emotional.
We recommend watching this short documentary about Michael Hersch.
The first event on Monday, January 29th is a solo concert that Jason is playing that includes Michael's entire 2.5-hour cycle, The Vanishing Pavilions. (The documentary talks about the piece some and includes a few excerpts.) Only two other pianists (including the composer) have ever performed it, the cycle has a pretty fearsome reputation due to its difficulty.
Jason's performance on Monday, January 29th is a rare opportunity to experience this rare and fearsome piece.
